Estate 1856 is a small, family-owned winery, located in the heart of Dry Creek Valley. The winery is named for the year our ancestor, Drake Duvall (D.D.) Phillips, originally purchased the ranch from part of a Mexican land-grant called Tzabaco Rancho. Five generations later, D.D.’s great-great grandson, Brian, alongside his wife, Janice, carry on the tradition of farming on the family’s 75-acre vineyard.

Janice is also our winemaker, who meticulously hand-crafts our award-winning Bordeaux varietals. Before starting Estate 1856, she spent 20 years at Jordan Winery, working with winemaker Rob Davis and legendary wine consultant Andre Tchelistcheff, crafting the quintessential Sonoma County Cabernet.

Brian & Janice are joined by their son, Rob, and his wife, Rachel, who manages marketing and sales for the winery. In joining their parents in this venture, the family is realizing their long-sought dream of making wine from the grapes we’ve so passionately cultivated over the years.
